Giving children a voice

Once a year, the Ulrich Wickert Foundation's Journalism Prize is awarded to the best reports and reports on the subject of children's rights. A special prize for girls and boys in developing countries, who are campaigning for their rights in Plan International media projects, also belongs to this category.

Since 2015, the Ulrich Wickert Foundation has also been awarding the Peter Scholl-Latour Prize for reporting on the suffering of people in crisis and crisis situationsand conflict areas.

Divisions of Ulrich Wickert Prize for Children's Rights

The Ulrich Wickert Prize for Children's Rights is awarded in four categories:

International Prize

This prize is awarded to a journalist from one of the Plan programme countries for their reporting on children's rights.

Germany/Austria Prize

This prize is awarded to a journalist for a contribution to the rights of girls and boys in one of the Plan Programme Countries.

Children/Youth Prize

This prize is awarded to a group of children or adolescents who have participated in Plan International media projects in one of the children's rights programme countries.

Peter Scholl - Latour Prize

This prize is awarded to a journalist for courageous and independent reporting on the suffering of people in crisis and conflict areas.

Jury of the Journalist Award

The finalists will be selected by a jury of journalists. The decisive factor for the awarding of the prize is the differentiated, balanced and comprehensible presentation of children's and girls' rights for readers. The contributions are intended to encourage readers to commit themselves to a sustainable improvement in the living conditions of girls and boys in developing countries.

Conditions of participation

The competition is open to editors from all departments and freelance journalists in Germany, Austria and the partner countries of Plan International. Contributions can be submitted in English, French, Spanish and German from print or online media, radio, television, radio and television published between 1 January and 31 December of the previous year. The number of submissions is limited to one contribution per person. Applications for the Ulrich Wickert Prize for Children's Rights 2024 are possible until 31 March 2024.
